What Does Om Mean?

The power of divinity has been believed by numerous cultures since the ancient times. The origin of this planet and the origin of human race has been something, that the archeologists have always grappled with. But, most of the cultures have believed that the origins are because of the divine word. People believe that it all originated from a vibration of sound. The quantum physicists are also studying vibrations. Also, from the Yogic perspective, there is a deep connection between our speech and ‘Prana’ (breath). The syllable OM is an ancient Sanskrit letter first found in the Vedas.

History Of Om

Om first appeared in the Vedas, between 1500 – 1200 BC, in a collection of Vedic Sanskrit hymns, which were sung in praise of the Divine. This word, Om, proved to be highly significant in accomplishing this sixth stage of yoga. It is believed that Om originated as a vibration in the human speech and was later explained in Upanishads, the ancient Indian mystical texts.

What Is The Meaning Of Om?

Om is one of the eight primordial seed syllables from Sanskrit language. David Frawley wrote in his book “Shakti bija mantras are probably the most important of all mantras, whether for meditation, worship of deities, energizing prana or for healing purposes. They carry the great forces of Nature such as the energies of the Sun and Moon, Fire and Water, electricity and magnetism, not simply as outer factors but as inner potentials of Divine Light. They project various aspects of force and radiance for body, mind and consciousness. They hold, resonate, and propel the Kundalini force in specific and transformative ways. Below is a simple table of the main energies (Shaktis) of the Shakti mantras.”

This powerful word is considered as the most sacred mantra in Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism. Most of the Sanskrit Mantras start and end with this sacred word. Om is more about the vibrations. It is the vibration of the void. Frawley claims that it is the sound of the creator, preserver and destroyer of the universe, who is also the inner guru and prime teacher. Also written and pronounced as Aum, the first letter A invokes Brahma – the creative aspect, U sound invokes Vishnu – the preserver, and M sound, Shiva – represents the destructive aspect of God. Everything starts and ends in this void.

According to Paramahansa Yogananda, the words Om and Aum have become the sacred word Hum of the Tibetans, Amin of the Moslems, and Amen of the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Jews, and Christians.

How To Harness The Power Of Om?

Om can be used to balance the body and mind in various ways. One is by breathing deeply and repeating the sound OM while holding your awareness at the crown of your head, or at the third eye point at the brow. Another way is to chant Om using a ‘Mala’, 108 times, known as the Japa yoga, in order to keep the mind focused. Also, associating the god’s name with this word, gives a state of bliss.

Out of the seven ‘Chakras’ of your body, Om is associated with the 6th (brow point) and 7th (top of the head). Practicing to chant this out loud to whispering the syllable, gives training to the mind to listen to the sound of the void.
